<fb:like href="http://coreyann.com/blog/travel/maine" layout="button_count" show_faces="true" width="450" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light" ref="AL2FB"></fb:like>

Last week Chris and I went to Maine, just for fun, for a few days. I had a small break before the “stretch” starts this year (weeks without breaks in weddings) so I thought it’d be fun to take a quick trip somewhere that I loved and wanted to share with my husband that didn’t get to go last time I was in Maine. I fell in love with the state quickly and have been eager to return since then. Good timing and a sale on The Cottages at Cabot Cove on Jetsetter convinced me it was time to go again.

Our flight out though was pure hell. I am usually pretty hard to anger during travel but it always seems that US Airways is the one to make me loose my shit when it is lost. Long story short, they closed the gate to our flight about 15 minutes early (instead of the standard 10) and when trying to get on the next flight out the CS person was ANYTHING but nice (and I was still being nice at this point). I forgot how absolutely horrid their service is and it will be a long, long time before I fly with them again. We finally made it out of Philly after 7 hours of a layover… it was a long day. Thankfully going back it wasn’t quite as bad but there were still a lot of snafus. This is why when I travel for weddings I always have at least a day buffer because things go wrong when flying and I never want to be late for an important event because of it.

For the next few days though we traveled along the coast and I took dozens of pictures of lighthouses. Of course, we were fogged out one day but it is what it is! It was still a nice relaxing trip and I look forward to seeing the state again in the fall when a couple friends and I head off to PEI (I am RIDICULOUSLY excited) in October.

Does this lighthouse look familiar?

Think for a moment… if you are mentally saying “run Forrest run!” in your head, you get a cupcake. This lighthouse was one of the “ends” of the US that Forrest runs to in Forrest Gump.

The name is Marshall Point Lighthouse and it’s in Port Clyde, Maine.

Yes, the fog was this insane… ALL DAY! There ended up being two lighthouses that were just off the coast that we couldn’t see due to the fog that hugged the coast allllll day. It was insane. There is ocean right at this lighthouse but we couldn’t even SEE it!

Does this lighthouse look familiar? It should if you’ve ever got a Maine quarter in the past – it’s the lighthouse featured on the state’s quarter!

Doubling Point lighthouse in Arrowsic, Maine. There’s no reason most people should know this lighthouse!

This is the front range lighthouse of the Doubling Point Range Lights in Arrowsic, Maine.

This is the path to the rear range light. The “range” lights line up so that shops can be guided into the harbor without hitting rocks. They are quite popular in Prince Edward Island but not as much here in the states.

I’ve been here before but since it’s one of my favorite lighthouse views I drug the hubs back to see it again.

I handed the camera over to Chris and got another picture at this lighthouse of myself I do not hate! Score!

Portsmouth Harbor Light was an unexpected gorgeous light! It wasn’t easy to get photographs of this one as it’s located on Coast Guard property and you are only allowed in Fort Constitution but I climbed out on some rocks in the water and was able to get this lovely shot.

One of the lovely things about Fort Constitution is that there are views of another lighthouse nearby, Whaleback Light. It’s hard to imagine being a keeper here in the 1800′s and living on this little bit of rock!

Isn’t this gate to the fort amazing?!

On the way back to the cottage we drove by the beaches of Kennebunkport and the rain was just starting to move in and the skies were amazing!

This was our “home” for the week – the “Float In” cottage at The Cottages at Cabot Cove. Loved!

This lighthouse I just barely missed seeing last year and I’m so glad this year Portland Head Light was able to be added to the “seen” list!

Another lighthouse that can be distantly seen from another’s location, here is Ram Island Ledge Light.

I loved this view of Portland from the next lighthouse, so gorgeous!

This lighthouse is adorable and the grecian columns remind me so much of what you see in plantations! It’s a shame some jerk decided to spray paint it. :(

I took a photo of Spring Point Ledge Light on the last trip but it was in the dark so I figured I’d stop by to get a daylight shot of it!

Cassie and Jeff are getting married Memorial Day weekend and love Cleveland. They really wanted to incorporate downtown into their engagement session as they grew up here and are living downtown. However, recently thieves are targeting photographers and are stealing gear at knife and gun point during shoots in Cleveland. It’s happened in the past but according to the police, it’s been happening pretty frequently lately – even in places you would last expect this to happen (Voinovich Park). My gear is insured but the last thing I want to do is put my clients in danger so I talked with them about moving their session somewhere else because of the crimes. They agreed and we decided to move the session to Brecksville Metro Parks. My husband followed up about the location (he was really concerned about me shooting downtown) and I told him about the move telling him that I’d be totally safe in the park.

Ha.

The morning of our shoot I wake up to find out that 5 morons decided that trying to blow up the Brecksville-Northfield High Level Bridge at Brecksville Metro Parks was a good idea. They went as far as placing the bombs at the base of the bridge and trying to detonate the bombs (which thankfully were duds). The FBI got involved and the newswires were on fire. I sat and stared at the news online with my jaw hanging open. Well played Cleveland, well played. I spent the rest of the day trying to ascertain if the park was open (found out 40 minutes before that it was) and then stalking the weather because it was hit and miss all day with rain. Eventually we decided to go for it, bombers and rain be damned!

The weather behaved itself with a few close clouds but what we weren’t expecting was the total influx of news reporters on the park. Cassie was following a list of locations in the park her sister had given her and we had no preconceived ideas of even using the almost-was-bombed bridge at all in the pictures, we were aiming for the cute white walking bridge nearby that just happened to be in the shadows of the big bridge. So while shooting (and incorporating the big bridge into pics because at that point I HAD to) I ended up on TV because they were filming their 6 o’clock segments… live. I’m still laughing. If you look around :30 you’ll see me photographing them on the railroad tracks.

Thankfully the session went off without a single hitch and we had a great day! Cassie and Jeff were crazy awesome and easy going. Sessions are so much fun when people just trust you, even if you lead them to where a snake is residing! Can’t wait to see these guys again in a few weeks!!!

Cassie and Jeff met on this swingset in High School so that was why this location was chosen. Awww right?

This is the image I was shooting on the tracks* when the footage on the news was being filmed.

I wasn’t kidding about the news crews. They were everywhere – there were a few more on site and roaming around.

Right before this they ran into a garter snake in the grass, they persevered though and I love the result!

After we left the park we headed down to Brandywine Falls for a quick wardrobe change and more pictures. I LOVE this image.

Love Cassie’s makeup? You should since my favorite makeup artist Jason Kelly did it! I did a bit of a squee and clap when I heard this news! YAY!!!

*Lately a lot of photographers have been getting hate mail for photographing on railroad tracks because they can be unsafe. I wholeheartedly agree with this as more often than not, people are shooting on tracks without knowing anything about them i.e. things to listen for, knowing that it is in fact illegal and not knowing how long it takes a train to stop. The only reason why I shot these is because a) I wanted to incorporate the bridge due to the events of the day and this was one of the few overlooks that weren’t bogarted by the multiple news crews and b) I know this particular train track schedule. The train that runs here only goes on weekends and for “special events” which I knew there were none of on this date. I also grew up alongside train tracks and photographed trains for about two years so I am familiar with not only the sounds of oncoming trains but I know how to hear & feel the rails to tell if there is one down the tracks. If I didn’t feel 100% safe having them walk this short bit I wouldn’t have done so.

Ironically a train is passing near my house right now. LOL

Tess is such a sweetie and is turning one this week! She is a bit more serious but eventually after getting used to the crazy lady with the big camera (and getting away from the fountain that completely entranced by) she warmed up with a smile or two. She may not be a giggler but oh my is she a chatterbox. She was telling me all about the park and what she thought we should do for posing. Too bad I don’t speak toddler! I am certain she had some fabulous ideas!

Tess isn’t quite walking or standing on her own yet and since the ground was yucky we decided this would be the best way to photograph her personality.

Lisa and David have been together for 12 years (!) and opted to have their children as their wedding party which I absolutely adored. Lisa’s oldest son walked her down the aisle and it was such a lovely moment. Lisa was one of the most relaxed brides I’ve had – everything was very go with the flow and no stress at all! I had a lovely afternoon with them as they got ready in their suite at the castle. The whole day was very relaxed and perfect.

Congratulations to you both!

I polled my friends on Facebook to find out where they most often order from and ordered prints from all of those companies. I ordered 15 different prints – landscapes, portraits, engagement and a wedding. I used images that were in a wide variety of lighting conditions and were edited differently (black and white as well as color). I then ordered the same set of images from every lab that was feasible for me. Note that near me, we do not have a Costco whom I hear has really excellent results with consumer printing.

Here’s my results. They may surprise you! NONE of these images were color corrected by the labs I ordered from but a few I used the “fast” upload since the software shoved me into it. I wanted to order these like a client would NOT how I would so if I was shoved into the faster upload I didn’t chose full.

I think that when comparing these results to the professional lab results it’s really easy to see why prints cost more when ordered through a professional lab. Simply put, the extra money is well spent for preserving priceless memories. 15¢ prints are fine for that softball game but when you invest in a photography session with a professional you really should invest in the best way to preserve those moments captured. I guarantee you that these prints from the consumer labs won’t last as long or stay as true to the original image as the professional labs. I may do a wear test to see what happens down the line for kicks…

In depth reviews of each printer

Here’s some insight into the lingo. Exposure = the light/dark of the image. Color = matching the colors as are true to my original image. This includes color casts (more of one color vs another) as well as saturation (how bright a color is). Shadows = amount of detail in the darker parts of the picture. If they are clipped, this means that you lose detail in the darker parts of the images which is often dark eyes and hair. Cropping = are the images cut how they were uploaded, is the whole image there or are parts missing. Sharpness = how in focus the picture is vs. how it was originally.

CVS
Cost: 19¢ prints
Paper: Kodak e-surface paper
Ordering: Ordered online with in store pick up in one hour. Software forced me into “fast” upload.
Results:
• Exposure: Pretty close to being spot on.
• Color: Slight yellow/magenta cast, a bit over saturated.
• Shadows: No clipping.
• Cropping: Crop is correct.
• Sharpness: Images are as sharp as the original file.
• Overall feeling: The ordering system forced me into a fast upload which promises that there is no difference in most images. The image quality is TERRIBLE and I am hoping this is due in part to the fast upload. The images are VERY grainy and in the highlights of the image, the colors are “blocked” much like in 8 bit video games. It’s truly awful. The paper is also quite awful, it sticks to itself and every time I try to flip through the images they stick, which is quite frustrating. The colors are good but the rest of it was terrible!

Kodak Gallery
Cost: 15¢ prints
Paper: Kodak e-surface paper
Ordering: Ordered online. Delivery took the longest of all the labs with 1 week turnaround.
Results:
• Exposure: Pretty close to being spot on.
• Color: Slight magenta cast.
• Shadows: No clipping.
• Cropping: Crop was a bit tighter than on original file.
• Sharpness: Image is a slight bit softer than original file.
• Overall feeling: Before MPix came out, I was a champion of Kodak Gallery as I really believed in their lab. Out of all of the labs, I really think I did OK as this was by far my favorite of all the consumer labs BUT the delivery time is terrible. I also think the paper is thin and I don’t like the feeling of it (they do offer a pro paper option for 35¢ a print). So it’s really a toss up between Kodak and MPix as the true winner but both are decent labs for the price.

MPix
Cost: 29¢ prints
Paper: Kodak e-surface paper
Ordering: Ordered online. Delivered in 3 days.
Results:
• Exposure: Spot on.
• Color: VERY slight red/yellow cast making image a hint warmer. A bit over saturated.
• Shadows: Very slight clipping.
• Cropping: Crop is correct.
• Sharpness: Images are as sharp as the original file.
• Overall feeling: I was very impressed with MPix but I was expecting to be. This is whom I tell my clients to order through if they are not going to use me, I’m glad that I was not disappointed.

Shutterfly
Cost: 9¢ prints
Paper: Fuji e-surface paper
Ordering: Ordered online. Delivered in 3 days.
Results:
• Exposure: Slightly overexposed.
• Color: Prominent yellow/green cast.
• Shadows: Slight clipping.
• Cropping: Crop is correct.
• Sharpness: Images are very soft.
• Overall feeling: When I opened up this envelope I actually let out a yipe. These are absolutely, positively TERRIBLE. These images definitely fit the old adage, “you get what you pay for.” Holy crap these are atrocious. The color is so bad it makes the baby look sick. The images are so soft they appear to be out of focus. BAD.

Snapfish
Cost: 15¢ prints
Paper: Fuji e-surface paper
Ordering: Ordered online. Delivered in 3 days.
Results:
• Exposure: Pretty close to being spot on.
• Color: Blue/green color cast.
• Shadows: Slight clipping.
• Cropping: Crop is correct.
• Sharpness: Images are as sharp as the original file.
• Overall feeling: The images look okay but if I’m going to have a color cast, I much prefer to have a slightly warm cast vs. a cool cast because cool casts (blues/greens) makes skin look sallow and people look sick. A warm cast (when not excessive) makes for a glow which is definitely preferable to sick! The images would be OK for landscapes but definitely not ideal for portraits.

Walgreens

Cost: 19¢ prints
Paper: Fuji glossy paper
Ordering: Ordered online with in store pick up in one hour. Used full resolution upload. Glossy is the only paper option for in store pick up.
Results:
• Exposure: Underexposed.
• Color: Red and a slight yellow cast. A bit over saturated compared to the original.
• Shadows: Clipped.
• Cropping: Crop is correct.
• Sharpness: Images are as sharp as the original file, possibly a tinge more sharp.
• Overall feeling: This was the first set of pictures I picked up and I immediately saw they were much darker than my originals. The color cast isn’t terrible but makes an impression. I also dislike glossy paper (fingerprints!) so I was bummed I had no option but to get glossy in the store.

Wal Mart
Cost: 15¢ prints
Paper: Fuji matte paper
Ordering: Ordered online with in store pick up in one hour. Used full resolution upload.
Results: Shadows have no detail and images are over saturated compared to original print. White lines along bottom of prints with an odd notch. Very very slight red cast, barely noticeable.
Results:
• Exposure: Slightly underexposed.
• Color: Red cast, over saturated.
• Shadows: Clipped.
• Cropping: Slightly miscut image, took a bit off o the top and the bottom of each image has white lines.
• Sharpness: Images are as sharp as the original file.
• Overall feeling: The redness of the image is noticeable but other than that the images are OK.

In comparing the labs I sent out a selection of 15 prints of various types of sessions and lighting conditions. I’m only showing one print from the lot but I used all 15 to base my comparisons on. The print I’m showing you for comparison in my opinion hit upon many of the things that I’m looking for when evaluating a print and felt this was a good representation of things that could go wrong in one print. Keep in mind that while I calibrated my scanner to the best of its abilities, the real life comparisons are MUCH more accurate than any scan. However each scan was done with the same settings with the same scanner and while the results may be a tinge more pronounced, I did compare each file to its scanned copy and none are vastly different from the prints. Also, please don’t note the cropping on these comparisons as scanning to a millimeter perfection is nearly impossible.

Bay Photo
Results:
• Exposure: Pretty close to being spot on.
• Color: Slightly red.
• Shadows: Slight clipping.
• Cropping: Crop is correct.
• Sharpness: Images are as sharp as the original file.
• Overall feeling: I have not used Bay Photo before but have heard good things. When I talked online about doing this test, many photographers urged me to use them. They were a very close runner up to being the top choice. Their delivery took about 3 days which is decent and the range of products is good. I would recommend them!

Millers
Results:
• Exposure: Slightly underexposed.
• Color: Red cast, oversaturated.
• Shadows: Clipping.
• Cropping: Crop is correct.
• Sharpness: Images are as sharp as the original file.
• Overall feeling: Millers is generally known as the cadillac of labs with professional photographers and I have to confess – I was a bit let down with them. Their delivery time is amazing (often next day!) but the cost of their products definitely has that service built into it. While these prints are still a far cry better than 95% of the consumer labs, I still was a bit bummed.

MPixPro
Results:
• Exposure: Slightly underexposed.
• Color: Slight red cast, slight oversaturation.
• Shadows: Slight clipping.
• Cropping: Crop is correct.
• Sharpness: Images are as sharp as the original file.
• Overall feeling: I got these prints the same day as Millers and I have to say, I was actually more impressed with the prints from MPixPro than from Millers, which is kind of weird because MPixPro is a step down from the Millers lab (they are in the same family). In person the differences are less noticeable and before I received the final sets of prints, this was my top contender for the “winner” of this contest.

ProDPI
Results:
• Exposure: Very slightly overexposed.
• Color: Slight red cast, slight oversaturation.
• Shadows: No clipping.
• Cropping: Crop is correct.
• Sharpness: Images are as sharp as the original file.
• Overall feeling: This is my lab of choice and I was on pins and needles waiting for these results. I was SO happy when I got them (with the requisite candy in the box!) and saw that they were exactly what I was hoping for. Their CS has always been top notch and I’ve always been impressed with their products. While the image is slightly warmer, it still reflects my vision for my images and it is hands down my favorite of all the pro labs!

WHCC
Results:
• Exposure: Slightly overexposed.
• Color: Slight red cast, slight desaturation of colors *more noticeable in person
• Shadows: No clipping.
• Cropping: Crop is correct.
• Sharpness: Images are as sharp as the original file.
• Overall feeling: Prior to switching to ProDPI I used WHCC because I really liked their products and prints. After WPPI in 2009 however, I switched to ProDPI after WHCC had some questionable marketing endeavors that I didn’t quite agree with. I did want to include them though because if they ended up being the best, I wanted to make sure my clients were getting the best, despite my misgivings. While the scan shows that this print isn’t terribly different than ProDPI in person it’s a bit of a different story. The colors are a bit muted and the ProDPI print pops a lot more on the paper. However, I do like the Tootsie Roll Pop that came in the box! It’s not enough though to woo me back.

So…. there you have it!! If you are local to me and would like to see these suckers in person, feel free to drop me a line. If you aren’t local and want to have the high resolution files to pick over yourself, let me know! Got any other ideas? Comment away!

Stay tuned for the comparison of the consumer labs in the coming days!
