Today I was tickled pink to find out that an image from Tiffany and Chris’s wedding placed in a contest run by ISPWP.  ISPWP is an organization for wedding photographers that prides themselves on having wedding photographers with the most experience in the world as members.  Their requirements to join include having shot a minimum of 50 weddings as a primary photographer, an extensive  portfolio review and a referral by a current member among other things.  To be a member is an honor in itself and to place in a contest that has such high quality of members is even more of an honor!

Every year I go down to the New Orleans area to see friends I have in the area and take some pictures of their adorable girls.  I typically fly into Gulfport as the airport is a breeze to fly in/out of and it’s near outlets (WOO!) and the beach.  We always stop at the beach to do a portrait session when I’m there so it makes sense to fly in/out of there.  Two and a half years ago, it was still a sad place to see – the coastline was still literally in shambles from Katrina and while there was signs of promise on the horizon, it mostly was a graveyard of buried hopes.  Over the past two years the area has rebuilt and came back better than before with newer casinos (no more barges this time around!) and homes being rebuilt and restored.

Now a new disaster has struck, the oil spill.  It’s horribly sad that an area that has already had its fair share of destruction and hard times has to face yet another crisis.  When flying in you could see patches of the oil from the air and on the beach you don’t have to go far to find evidence of it.  While the oil isn’t as predominant on the beach in Gulfport like it is in Destin, it still is there and a visible reminder of what may come and what it has already destroyed.  This isn’t something that is going to be fixed this year, next year or maybe even in our lifetimes.  In Ohio it’s a passing topic that is usually only talked about when all speculation of where LeBron James is going fizzles out.  In the Gulf Coast, it’s all anyone can think or talk of because this oil spill could mean the end as life as they know it.

An oil boom that broke off and washed up along the shore.  From the air you can see long strands of these guarding the coves from oil.  As you can see, they soak up the oil on the surface and are very similar in looks to pantyhose with cotton stuffed inside.

A tar ball that washed ashore.  Further down there were many more like this but the beach was closed for cleanup.  I had never seen one of these before and was surprised how much it looked like an ordinary rock.

Anyone who tried to email me or view the site over the weekend I apologize profusely for the kerfuffle.  My domain registrar had a malfunction and my domain was down over the weekend.  Of COURSE they aren’t open on weekends (despite promoting 24/7/365 service!) and I wasn’t able to do anything about it until this morning.  Everything should be working fine now, thanks so much for your understanding and patience!

I’ve been in love with Maria Pastrore Design since I shot Heidi’s wedding where she designed all of the stationery items.  They were GORGEOUS.  I loved all of the details, especially the pearls.  The items all SCREAMED Heidi.  I contacted Maria not long after in hopes of working with her for some ideas I had flowing but she was too busy with her day job and needed to focus on that.  I was disappointed but understood – but I never forgot her beautiful work.

A couple years later and Maria is finally breaking out on her own and running her own business!  I was so excited when I found out and even more so after I saw all of the beautiful work she was doing for Heidi.  Her new logo is beyond amazing, her business cards are unique and wonderful… I could go on but really just go to her site and let your eyes feast on the beauty there!  Beware for the graphic lovers out there, it’s awesome overload.

So it is no surprise that I hired Maria to help me with some projects including a new Twitter background.  The big project (for the moment… more to come!) was getting me a new business card.  I have to say, I LOVE my cards.  Everyone else does too.  They are perfect for me and I adore the embossed dots.  It’s almost like a stress relief thing, I find myself rubbing the dotted line every time I pick one up!

There’ll be more Maria goodies coming down the line but for now I had to show off my new cards… and Heidi’s.

I’m finally back home and while I enjoy traveling, it feels SO good to be home!!!  I didn’t get a chance to post before I left, but I was in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic this past week shooting a wedding for Anne Ruthmann at the gorgeous Paradisus Palma Real resort.  Now it’s back to reality and normal spring weather – however the mini break to 90 degrees was quite nice!
