Rockland, Maine in October

It’s another post in the series from my trip to Maine last October!  For part one (Midcoast Maine) go here and for part two (Acadia National Park) go here.

After Jill and I got our naps in and warmed up a bit from the cold sunrise at Cadillac Mountain, we headed off towards our next stop on our trip.  We left pretty early and meandered down the coast, stopping at Dyce Head Lighthouse (or Dice Head) not too far from Acadia.  I’ve been there before but I wanted Jill to see it since it’s a cute little lighthouse and I had some unfinished business to attend to there – seeing just what was further down the path that I was afraid to take all the way to the end on my last stop since I was alone.  The path I found lead to some stairs.  During low tide I hear that it’s a nice beach but we were there at high tide and there wasn’t much to see but water.  At least I finally made it to the end of the path!

We didn’t have a far drive on this day to our next stop and our home for the evening – The Samoset Resort.  The last time I stayed in Rockland I stayed at the charming Berry Manor Inn but it’s a bit more romantic and not quite girls trip-y.  The additional perk to the Samoset was that it faced what the trip was about – a lighthouse.  Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse may be one of my favorites but not for the conventional reasons.  It’s the home of the place where I took one of my favorite pictures ever of a sunset.  I’ve been wanting to return to hopefully see another beautiful sunset and actually MAKE it to the lighthouse this time.

We did end up making it out to the lighthouse but the light wasn’t really on my side (literally) so the pictures were ho-hum.

When the sunset finally happened it wasn’t quite the same show that I had before.  Once I got over that disappointment I realized that this sunset was still a pretty one and ended up being the best one from the trip.  So it all worked out.  I still want to come back someday and hope for another show!  The top image is with my iPhone 6S+, the bottom with my Nikon D4.

That night we decided to stay in and enjoy the resort instead of venturing out into the food scene in Rockland (which it is famous for).  Neither of us really felt like getting dressed up and we had already enjoyed lunch on the resort and it was delicious so we were happy to stay in.  It was a great decision because dinner was also fantastic at the resort!  We got a bottle of prosecco to go and enjoyed it on our balcony watching the lighthouse and hoping to get a glimpse of the meteor shower (no such luck due to clouds).  If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend this resort!!!

The next morning we headed out pretty early, stopping off at the nearby Owl’s Head Lighthouse before continuing on towards Ogunquit.  I had also been to this charmer before but it was nice to see it again.  If you’re ever in the area make sure to stop by, the drive out to it is so picturesque AND these steps aren’t as daunting as they seem.  Promise!

We had a bit of a drive down to Ogunquit but luckily we had a couple stops planned to break up the trip just a bit.  Our first stop after Owl’s Head was to one of my favorite lighthouses in Maine, Portland Head Light.   It was rainy and foggy by the time we arrived here and the foghorn was going (you could also hear the ones of the other lighthouses nearby).  I really love this lighthouse mostly because of the setup.  It’s on a park property and there’s so many different views and angles of this lovely lighthouse.  Although I tend to keep returning to the same ones, one day I hope to have the time to explore a bit more!

On our final stop before arriving in Ogunquit, we hit up one place I’ve been dying to see ever since I started venturing to Maine, Old Orchard Beach.  It just always sounded so cute and I’ve always wanted to see a boardwalk/pier like you see all of the time in movies.  Of course everything was closed up for the season (to the point there wasn’t anything open for lunch anywhere it seemed in the city) but it was still fun to finally lay eyes on.  My 8 year old self would have LOVED to visit this place in the summer and the kid at heart in me hopes that I return someday when it’s open!

After striking out at Old Orchard Beach we ended up just getting fast food at a rest stop along I95 and I may have attempted to free a lobster but struck out when I couldn’t find any way to BUY the lobster that was alone in a tank in a shop that was closed up.  I’m sorry Mr. Lobster!  I tried!

Next up is the city that stole my heart away from all other places I’ve fallen in love with before in Maine… Ogunquit!
