{"id":4798,"date":"2014-05-06T17:05:58","date_gmt":"2014-05-06T21:05:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/?p=4798"},"modified":"2014-05-06T17:05:58","modified_gmt":"2014-05-06T21:05:58","slug":"autumn-maine-lighthouses-sunset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/travel\/autumn-maine-lighthouses-sunset","title":{"rendered":"Autumn in Maine &#8211; Lighthouses and Sunset!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is my final blog from my trip last October to Maine, I&#8217;m sad to see the journey end but I still have loads to catch up on so it&#8217;s time. \u00a0If you missed the previous installments, read about <a title=\"Autumn in Maine \u2013 Boston to Bar Harbor\" href=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/travel\/autumn-maine\" target=\"_blank\">my first day in and around Portland<\/a> and <a title=\"Autumn in Maine \u2013  Bar Harbor Whale Watch Lighthouse Tour &amp; Mount Desert Island\" href=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/travel\/autumn-maine-bar-harbor-whale-watch-lighthouse-tour-mount-desert-island\" target=\"_blank\">my second and third days in and around Bar Harbor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the last full day in Maine I had always planned on spending a night in Rockland, mostly because of the rave reviews I had found online for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berrymanorinn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Berry Manor Inn<\/a>. \u00a0I ended up changing up my trip early on so I could stay there on the night that a better room was available. \u00a0I&#8217;ve not stayed in many B&amp;B&#8217;s but this one just spoke to me and I was really excited to stay here. \u00a0I was not disappointed! \u00a0However, before I got there I had a fun drive from Bar Harbor to Rockland!<\/p>\n<p>It was a partly sunny (or partly cloudy, what the hell is the difference) day that started out in Bar Harbor where I finally managed to wake up early enough for the sunrise. \u00a0It was pretty and probably got prettier but I crashed back out after taking this picture. \u00a0I&#8217;m a night owl but I had been waking up pretty early every morning to get the most out of the daylight but with staying up until 2AM my sleep was all jacked up LOL!<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4799\" alt=\"sunrise in bar harbor maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0001.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I headed out towards my first destination: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newenglandlighthouses.net\/dice-head.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dice Head (aka Dyce Head) Lighthouse<\/a>. \u00a0The attached keepers house is still occupied but they allow photos so long as you stick to the trail around the property. \u00a0There were stairs that lead down to a beach but I decided to go back to my car when a guy got out and was taking pics. \u00a0Sometimes I do become a chicken when in remote areas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4800\" alt=\"dyce head lighthouse in maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0002.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4801\" alt=\"dice head lighthouse in maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0003.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I passed a few turkeys and drove down a lot of random roads to reach my next destination &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maine.gov\/mdot\/pnbo\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Penobscot Narrows Bridge<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;d <a title=\"Travel \u2022 Covered Bridges, Lighthouses and Anne, Oh My!\" href=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/travel\/travel-covered-bridges-lighthouses-and-anne-oh-my\" target=\"_blank\">stopped by the year before<\/a> but I didn&#8217;t go up in the observatory which is the highest in the world on a bridge at 477&#8242; high.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4802\" alt=\"penobscot narrows bridge observatory in maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0004-798x600.jpg\" width=\"798\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0004-798x600.jpg 798w, https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0004.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4803\" alt=\"autumn in penobscot maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0005.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4804\" alt=\"penobscot narrows bridge in maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0006.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From there I continued on my drive towards Rockland stopping off at Fort Point to check out the lighthouse there at Fort Point Light. \u00a0It&#8217;s a cute little lighthouse on open grounds that unfortunately are full of land minds of the doggie kind :(.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4805\" alt=\"fort point light in maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0007.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After I kept smelling something foul I realized I had stepped in dog poo so I pulled off at this beach along the way in Lincolnville to attempt to scrape off what I could from my shoe and pants. \u00a0UGH. \u00a0The beach was pretty though and it was nice to get out and stretch my legs a bit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4806\" alt=\"lincolnville beach in maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0008.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the must-stop places I kept coming across online was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.camdenmainevacation.com\/camden-hills-state-park.php\" target=\"_blank\">Mt. Battie in Camden, Maine<\/a> so I stopped on by since it was along the way. \u00a0While the skies weren&#8217;t perfect it was still a pretty view and I&#8217;m glad I made the stop.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4807\" alt=\"camden hills state park\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0009.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4808\" alt=\"view from mt battie in camden maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0010.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4809\" alt=\"autumn foilage in maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0011.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I got through Camden and stopped off to drop off my things and check in at the Berry Manor Inn. \u00a0They were so gracious and welcoming and it felt like home within minutes. \u00a0I went back out to catch the last hour or so of daylight by marking off the last two lighthouses on the list, starting off with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newenglandlighthouses.net\/owls-head.html\" target=\"_blank\">Owl&#8217;s Head Light<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s this adorable tiny lighthouse perched on top of a hill and the views were amazing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4810\" alt=\"owls head light in maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0012.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4811\" alt=\"owl's head lighthouse\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0013-798x600.jpg\" width=\"798\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0013-798x600.jpg 798w, https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0013.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4812\" alt=\"views from owl's head lighthouse in maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0014.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the drive back to the main road I thought this view of the harbor with all of the lobster boats was charming so I stopped for a quick picture.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4813\" alt=\"lobster boats at sunset\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0015.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"535\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I wish I&#8217;d taken more images of this street sign but I&#8217;m glad I at least stopped for one! \u00a0How cute is this with all of the buoys? \u00a0I love Owl&#8217;s Head!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4814\" alt=\"buoys on lobster rd street sign in owls head maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0016.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The final lighthouse on my list was a tricky one &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/rocklandharborlights.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rockland Breakwater Light<\/a>. \u00a0The lighthouse is out at the end of a granite breakwater that is 7\/8ths of a mile long. \u00a0I arrived just before sunset and originally only intended to go out and capture a few images from the start of the breakwater before heading back to my room and going to dinner. \u00a0Since I thought I&#8217;d go out on a few of the stones, I decided to leave my wide angle lens in the car and only take my cell phone and telephoto with me. \u00a0Oops.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4815\" alt=\"rockland breakwater light\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0017.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This was the only image I originally intended to take but the light wasn&#8217;t great and ALL KINDS of people were walking the breakwater. \u00a0While it isn&#8217;t like sidewalk it wasn&#8217;t nearly as hard as I had heard it would be. \u00a0The B&amp;B warned me that people fall off often and break limbs and I was initially scared to do it especially considering I was on my own and had no one that could call 911 for me. \u00a0However, so many were out there &#8211; much older than I &#8211; that I decided to heck with it and started the journey out to the lighthouse.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4816\" alt=\"rockland breakwater light in maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0018.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I looked over at one point and thought, oh, pretty sunset! and kept on going. \u00a0The people ahead of me decided at this point to turn back because they didn&#8217;t want to get caught out on the breakwater once it got dark. \u00a0I contemplated turning around but by this point I was well over halfway there and I was determined to make it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4817\" alt=\"sunset in rockland maine\" src=\"https:\/\/coreyann.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/autumn-in-maine_0019.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is why I didn&#8217;t. \u00a0After another 10 minutes or so of me jumping from rock to rock I look over and just STOPPED. \u00a0Well, helloooooooooo sunset!
