Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast
I’ve done a few Halloween blogs in the past like this one from the Ghosts & Graveyard Tour in Boston on Halloween (with a cameo by the amazing Alison Arngrim) or this one from my stay at The Myrtles Plantation a few years ago. Here’s the latest addition from my trip a week ago to Maine – before I left I swung down to one place I’ve been meaning to visit for a long time – the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast Museum. Yes, I am strange. However the unsolved murder of the Bordens has always intrigued me because while Lizzie is the most likely suspect, there’s plenty of side eye to go around to some either who helped her or at least knew what was going on.
Of course, it was raining when I was there. However he’s a view of the house. I’m not sure if the green is the correct color historically but I’d lean towards yes. I took the tour solo as the other group had already gone in and I was the only one awaiting the 1PM tour. They let you take pictures through the house which is great!
This is the infamous room where Mr. Borden was murdered as he napped on the couch around 2 hours after his wife was murdered upstairs. This is a replica couch but very similar to the same from that day.
I haven’t studied the case in depth, just know a bit from what I’ve picked up over the years but I learned a lot of interesting things I didn’t know before on the tour – one fact being that Lizzie initially claimed that when her Father got home she removed his shoes for him before he took his nap. He was found with his shoes on.
When you go up the stairs you can very easily see beneath the guest bed to where Mrs. Borden was found in the guest room. Here the tour guide is laying in the same place so you get a sense of how hard it would be to not see her there. Lizzie went up and down these stairs a few times before the murders were discovered.
A closer look at the guest room and area where Mrs. Borden was found. Of all the rooms of the house, this one felt VERY heavy to me and I wasn’t keen on staying in it longer than necessary.
The remainder of the tour was the other rooms in the Inn and the rest of the story of the day. On the way out of the house my camera took this picture on its own. It was the SLR which not only requires the button to be pushed but for focus to be achieved so the button has to be pressed down halfway then the rest of the way. My hand was on the railing (because I’m clumsy) and the other was no where near the camera. By far the strangest thing to happen to me at the house. As you can see, there was nothing to be seen in the picture but it freaked me out just a bit!
