Corey Talks: Trash the Dress

More Maui photos are coming up soon (next up is the luau complete with fire dancer!!!) but I wanted to get in at least one Corey Talks before I leave next week for Vegas for WPPI (more on that in another post but it’s the largest photography convention in the US and I’ll be learning from the best of the best and bringing that home to apply to my weddings!). This week’s topic is a question that I get a lot at my client meetings – especially from the grooms. What is a Trash the Dress session???

Technically – for me – it’s a session with a bride (and groom if he’s willing) that’s done after the wedding where the bride isn’t as worried about getting her dress dirty. The day of the wedding more often than not, the bride wants to remain as pristine as possible so that she still looks amazing at her reception – however one cannot deny that pictures in the water, on the beach, in a park or in a field can be stunningly beautiful and a wonderful compliment to the portraits on the wedding day. However, the bride doesn’t want to go to these locations because of the chance of her dress getting dirty or wet. In comes the idea of Trash the Dress sessions – mostly thanks to Mark Eric of Trash the Dress and John Michael Cooper of Altf Photography whom have made this idea mainstream with modern wedding photographers.

Trash the Dress sessions have many different monkiers from Day After Sessions to Fearless Bridals but they all essentially mean the same thing – a session after the wedding where you go to a location you love for photos that are hot! They are also especially ideal for destination weddings to give the couple a chance to show off their gorgeous location they wanted to get married at just a bit more. Personally I think these sessions are my favorite because we have a bit more freedom to play and no worries of being late to the reception or being on a schedule. I also highly recommend these sessions to couples that know their day is going to run on a tight schedule and they may not have room for all the photos they want. They can be done anytime after the wedding but usually the day after is best because typically you can still have the tux and your flowers should still be fresh. Anytime is best though and if the groom doesn’t want to re-rent a tux a suit is always a perfect compliment to his lovely bride.

Finally, despite what the name may convey, with proper cleaning and care after the session most dresses are not ‘trashed’ and are still in like-new conditions. That is unless you go full out and roll around in some mud or really have some fun on the beach. You only wear it once right????
